PHONETIC ERRORS MADE BY ENGLISH DEPARTMENT STUDENTS OF STKIP YDB LUBUK ALUNG IN PRONOUNCING ENGLISH CONSONANT SOUND

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to analyze the error in pronouncing consonants that is occur by the English Department students of STKIP Dharma Bakti Lubuk Alung. This researcher had analyzed fifteen students in the first semester of STKIP Dharma Bakti Lubuk Alung. This research is started by giving text that contains consonants to the students. Then the researcher gave them opportunities to read the text to practice. The students were asked to read the text one by one. After that, the researcher analyzed the errors made by the students in pronounce the consonant. Based on the research, it was found that students have difficulties in pronounce some words. From analyzing the data in reading text that did by students, it was found that errors velar nasal-voiced, the percentage of it 15.73% with 14 error. Then the lowest error made by the students was labiodental fricative voiceless and alveola stop voiceless, 1 mistake with 1.1% percentage.
